In a short but very significant ceremony, the Dominica Association of Teachers reached out to seventeen teachers of the Petite Savanne Community. Each teacher received a cheque or cash totalling one thousand dollars (EC $1000.00).

The ceremony was held on Wednesday, August 09, 2015 at the DAT’s Office and forms part of what the Union dubs the “DAT TS Erika Relief”.
Speaking at the ceremony, President of the Dominica Association of Teachers Mrs. Celia Nicholas said “When you hurt, as part of DAT, we also hurt.” She added, “We are pleased that we’re not only in a position to help you, but we have friends outside of Dominica who are very concerned about you and are willing to extend some help.”

The teachers were very appreciative of the gesture and spokesperson for the group Mrs. Stephanie Darroux Baron expressed thanks on behalf of the teachers.

Also saying thanks, this time on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development was District Education Officer for the South, Mr. Francis John Lewis.

The funds were made available through the generosity of the Bermuda Union of Teachers and the Caribbean Union of Teachers Secretariat headed by the General Secretary Dr. Virginia Albert-Poyotte.

The DAT is expecting to make similar presentations to teachers of other areas who were impacted by Tropical Storm Erika. DAT has already received pledges for support from the Jamaica Teachers Association and Education International.
